Lesson 2: So you want a pet? Science, 1st Grade

1. Common Core Standards
LS3.A: Inheritance of Traits- Young animals are very much, but not exactly like, their parents. Plants also are very much, but not exactly, like their parents. (1-LS3-1)
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.2- Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.

2. Student Learning Objectives (see Blooms Taxonomy):
  • Students will distinguish in what ways young animals that could be a pet are similar to their parents.
  • Students will question (and answer questions) about young animals that could be a pet.

Add below objectives the following information:
a) Explain how this lesson supports previous and subsequent learning:
  • Students have learned about the traits animals have.
  • Students will continue learning about other animals, that cannot be pets, and in what ways they are similar to their parents.
  • Students will also learn about plants and learn how they have similar traits to their parents.

3. Assessment
  • Students' answers to the EDpuzzle.

4. Materials/Resources
  • Thinglink
  • EDpuzzle:
  • Chromebooks

5. Classroom Learning Environment Focus
  • Students will work on their own computer (Chromebook) at their desk.

6. Lesson Plan
a. Initiation
  • Teacher will begin the lesson in the classroom. She will start by asking students to think of traits that animals have.
  • All of the traits that the students came up with will be written on the board.
  • Teacher will then ask the question: "do you think babies have traits similar to their parents?"
  • Teacher will remind the students about the story "What Pet Should I Get?" and that when you get a baby animal as a pet, they may share similar traits with their parents.
b. Sequence of Learning Activities/questions/transitions
  • Students will be directed to go to EDpuzzle to complete the activity provided.
  • Students will watch the EDpuzzle video and answer all 5 questions. After the video, they will make a list of all of the animals they saw that could be a pet and to briefly list the traits they share with their parents in the pictures. They may rematch it if they have forgotten all of he animals in the video that can be a pet.
  • Afterwards, students will take a closer look at cats and their traits relating to similarities with their parents. They will do this by using the thinglink provided. They must look at all 3 links and answer all questions asked for each link. If they have any questions while completing their work, they will write them down to research further at a later time.
c. Closure
  • Students will share their answers/lists from EDpuzzle and share what they learned on the thinglink.
